(Initial message here was about how I posted this thread too early on accident)
Ways that trail ruins could be useful (only rare suspicious gravel):
[Relic] Music Disc 1/12 (Duplicate Allay/Play Music Disk in Jukebox)
[7] Pottery Sherds - (Any) 7/12 (Obtain Pottery Sherd)
[4] Armor Trims - (Any) 4/12 | (Specific) 1/12 (Use Smithing Table/Obtain 2 Unique Armor Trims) (very good for this goal as there are 4 unique and they are fairly common)
They spawn in Jungles, Old Growth Birch Forest, Old Growth Pine Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Taiga biomes.
The structure is usually entirely underground with only the top of the tower sticking out - this central tower always connects to a a main road (which consists of cobble, stone, and stone bricks at its base) and along this road there are always 2 buildings and sometimes some smaller buildings/decor. You can find all of the various structure files on the mc wiki!
How the suspicious gravel blocks are generated: https://discord.com/channels/1493030345048719483/1538855608403632128/1538916764711125092

We are all digging down on trail ruins to get a composter

SparkFire_OPlast month
I felt like I should include it anyways ok
Duckylast month
I have looked into trail ruin generation before. The loot inside a suspicious sand/gravel block depends on the block's position in the world
Duckylast month
The location of the suspicious gravel blocks is random for each trail ruin, so there is no way to learn exactly where the good ones are
Duckylast month
Trail ruins have different sections, and each section has up to 3 suspicious gravel with "rare" loot table and the rest use the "common" loot table. Which one are rare and which are common is random too
Duckylast month
So it can be a useful strat to leave a section once you get all the rare loot in it, if you are looking for music discs, sherds, or armour trims
Fox4 🦊last month
I think the center paths have no "rare" suspicious gravel spawn

Duckylast month
Trail ruins are buried structures that work as archaeological sites where suspicious gravel generates. They are found in heavily forested biomes and resemble ruined villages from a lost culture.
Duckylast month
the tower top pieces and the road pieces have no "rare" suspicious gravel, you are right
Duckylast month
you can also get useful things from the "common" loot table, like candles for light a candle, beetroot seeds for beetroot soup, and leads
Duckylast month
that's everything I know about trail ruins
SparkFire_OPlast month(edited)
Oh thats really interesting actually!
SparkFire_OPlast month
Suspicious blocks generated at the same coordinates with the same loot table will always give the same item across worlds then right?
Duckylast month
They should but it’s still random if the suspicious block is picking from the rare loot table or the common loot table
Duckylast month
Yes
SparkFire_OPlast month
Yeah was accounting for that with the “with the same loot table”
Duckylast month
Theoretically you could memorize block positions that give specific items, but that is so much information that would be useful so rarely
SparkFire_OPlast month
Yeah idt its feasible at all
SparkFire_OPlast month
Just fun tidbit
SparkFire_OPlast month(edited)
Also looks like there are 3 different processor lists that are used to replace gravel with dirt/both suspicious gravel types and the one thats chosen depends on the structure piece
Duckylast month
Wait you could use trail ruins for 64 coarse dirt. That’s really funny

SparkFire_OPlast month(edited)
Same with the tower_top and all of the road structure pieces - they all spawn with 2 normal suspicious gravel.
SparkFire_OPlast month
I looked into it more and the process for suspicious gravel generation actually works like this; First depending on the structure piece it chooses 1 of 3 processor lists, then no matter which one is chosen, it replaces 20% of the gravel with dirt, then 10% of the remaining gravel with coarse dirt, then 10% of the remaining gravel with normal suspicious gravel, and finally 10% of the remaining gravel with rare suspicious gravel (so the processor lists impact is effectively only on where the blocks spawn). The entire process mentioned above only doesn’t apply for the tower_top structure piece, where instead it just replaces 2 gravel with 2 normal suspicious gravel. Something to note is that when the initial process I mentioned happens the amount of normal/rare suspicious gravel is capped - 2 normal and 0 rare for all road structure pieces and 6 normal and 3 rare for all other structure pieces (except tower_top ofc).
SparkFire_OPlast month
The initial process that I mentioned also sometimes results in structure pieces sometimes having less than the cap of suspicious gravel - which is much more prevalent in smaller structures such as alot of the decor sub structures
SparkFire_OPlast month
I just did a whole lot of yapping
Duckylast month
It’s good yapping
Duckylast month
From experience the smaller pieces are way more dense when it comes to amount of suspicious gravel
Duckylast month
So those are probably the most efficient to target if you want the rare loot table since you will have to dig the least blocks to excavate them
SparkFire_OPlast month(edited)
It might be worth to memorize the structure piece that has the damaged anvil
SparkFire_OPlast month(edited)
Could also be worth for the other workstations but much less so
SparkFire_OPlast month(edited)
Probably the only other blocks realistically viable are the ones for Mud Brick Wall, Brick Wall and Stone Bricks
SparkFire_OPlast month(edited)
The trims/sherds are actually the best probably!
Duckylast month
it could be really nice to go for candle at trail ruins since they are in some biomes with no beehives and it would skip digging for trial chamber or ancient city
SparkFire_OPlast month
Oh yeah forgot about that one!
tjthingslast month
So let me dig in the buried maze structure instead

Duckylast month
just hit the tower top highroll

SparkFire_OPlast month
You spend like 2 min digging to city vs have to find some buried suspicious gravel both can be viable depending on situation
Duckylast month
I used a binomial distribution calculator to find how likely it is to get each item from the tower_top section, and how likely from tower_top and tower sections combined

Important things here:
- the 2 gravel in tower_top have a 32% chance to hit for candle, absolutely worth it
- if you don't hit candle in tower_top, you have an 86% chance to get at least one from tower_top and the main tower segment together
- For most early game goals that involve the common suspicious gravel loot tables, the odds are bad
- for anything in the rare loot table, dig straight down through the floor of the tower_top section into the main tower section
- Sherds are ~93% in the main tower section from the 3 rare sus gravel there
- Armor trims are also very likely in the 3 rare sus gravel at ~70%
- There's about 23% chance to get the relic disc, which isn't great but isn't terrible. You could highroll for it

The odds on the chart are the chances of getting at least 1 of the item

Some more info about the tower sections:
- only 1 of 5 possible tower_top sections has mud bricks and it only has 3 so you will still need a stonecutter if you don't want to dig more. It's the one with the blue and red terracotta
- 3 of 5 of the possible tower sections has lots of mud bricks in the walls, so you can make mud brick wall without a stonecutter if you need to.
- the other 2 have regular bricks instead so if you see regular bricks you need to dig until you hit a stone brick/cobblestone floor, then check the other sections

To insta mine gravel you need efficiency 3 on a gold or netherite shovel and efficiency 4 on any other type of shovel

ok I'm done researching for today, hopefully this is useful to someone!
