Generate Basalt Goal

Minecraft has a mechanic where lava flowing over soul soil and touching blue ice generates basalt. To fix possible confusion with the goal the icon could include these.
You can take blue ice with you from chests in snowy villages, crafted from packed ice in ancient city ice box chests, obtained with silk touch or traded by wandering trader, or you can use it naturally generated (snowy village piles, frozen ocean, ancient city) which changes your pathing.
You can get soul soil from SSV or by another cool mechanic where breaking a soul campfire crafted from soul sand drops soul soil. This means you could do this entirely in an ancient city.
Lava can be picked up with a bucket or rarely rerouted to flow where you need it to.
Goal would probably want to filter for the cold biomes/ancient city.

Generate Basalt Goal

i don't think it should filter for an ancient city, silk touch sounds very annoying most of the seeds but bringing the setup to blue ice sounds very reasonable
beniibobsOP2 months ago
mentioning silk touch mainly just in the case of rp but yeah. Idm too much how it’s filtered for
sugaarush2 months ago
i’m just not sure how it could be detected
beniibobsOP2 months ago
I mean that’s not a reason to downvote, apparently it’s a gridlock goal already so it’s possible
blanket addict2 months ago
it presumably could be detected but I personally dislike goals like this where detecting them feels unnatural and disconnected from the player
blanket addict2 months ago(edited)
just doesn't feel like it's in the spirit of draftout to me even though I really like the way it'd function gameplay wise
beniibobsOP2 months ago
I feel like that’s a weird line to draw. This won’t happen naturally, you’re gonna have to be actively bringing it about, it’s not really all that disconnected from the player. If “Put a Carved Pumpkin on a Mob” were a goal, would you object on the same ground?
beniibobsOP2 months ago
and idk what u mean by the concept of unnatural detection
blanket addict2 months ago
yeah
blanket addict2 months ago
it's basically a taste thing but I don't think I'm alone on it, and I don't think any currently existing goals feel like this
blanket addict2 months ago
the player has to create the basalt generator but then it kinda just works on its own, it doesn't feel like a direct player action
beniibobsOP2 months ago
So if you interacted with that basalt block somehow then it’d be fine.
blanket addict2 months ago
yeah
blanket addict2 months ago(edited)
idk a way to do that though while forcing a basalt generator
beniibobsOP2 months ago
That just seems like a completely superfluous requirement to me, but nothing I can do about people’s preferences

Well, just off the top of my head, Fill Armor Stand could (maybe?) be done with a dispenser, so the detection of that goal must be “unnatural and disconnected from the player” too?
blanket addict2 months ago(edited)
does it actually work if you use a dispenser on it for the final armor piece
blanket addict2 months ago
I'd expect it to not
blanket addict2 months ago
it's not really about how goals are actually detected though more about the design philosophy behind goals feeling the same as minecraft advancements
beniibobsOP2 months ago
I’m genuinely really surprised that this would get this much hate from the community, I don’t see a good reason why it wouldn’t be a good goal.
maskers2 months ago
what if you think of it as "Build a basalt generator"
same goal essentially but now its you doing something
same goal essentially but now its you doing something
beniibobsOP2 months ago(edited)
I think people have objected in the past to “build” goals (e.g. https://discord.com/channels/1493030345048719483/1531192334749012131, and https://discord.com/channels/1493030345048719483/1511376300164780103), but this suggestion is a cool mechanic that Mojang added to the game, and those sorts of cool things are what I interpret the spirit of Draftout to be all about
beniibobsOP2 months ago
That and it’s very doable in a draftout timeframe, requires thinking all throughout different stages of the game, not just when it comes up, has overlap with other goals (e.g. obtain soul campfire) and can have a few different lines
Myriantics2 months ago
Probably not viable and might not be in the spirit of Draftout as you could get perma locked out of it, but it could be something like “Mine Basalt without ever entering the Nether”
Myriantics2 months ago
Although I guess it needs soul soil so thatd be eh
beniibobsOP2 months ago
If u read OP u can break soul campfires to get soul soil
beniibobsOP2 months ago
so ancient city is viable but I wouldn’t want to force it
Myriantics2 months ago
Yeah ik but gating behind city would suck
maskers2 months ago
i mean the objection is just that you need to define a very clear line for the build right, which is impossible for "build a house"
and here that line is whether the basalt generator works
and here that line is whether the basalt generator works
beniibobsOP2 months ago
I don’t think Advancements supports that either — what about The Power of Books? Birthday Song? The game isn’t really checking anything to do with the player there. I could totally see a world where generating basalt was made an advancement.
beniibobsOP2 months ago(edited)
you could check if the player placed the soul soil, which is a redundant check but it would make the player involved if the worry is that we’re checking for a natural phenomenon
blanket addict2 months ago(edited)
honestly did not know the power of books was an advancement and am very surprised that that got added
blanket addict2 months ago(edited)
I still find this weird but it's weird in a way that's consistent with vanilla minecraft apparently so idk what to make of that
blanket addict2 months ago
I mostly brought this up (and bring it up on similar suggestions) because I don't think I'm the only person who thinks of stuff this way so I want to put it out there, but if I am in a tiny minority then I don't really mind
blanket addict2 months ago
I still like the vibes of draftout feeling more advancement criteria/statistics based but it's clearly not a standard the vanilla game follows
beniibobsOP2 months ago
More unique goals will be interesting and keep the game fresh. Why would we want to arbitrarily limit the scope of goals to something narrower than what Mojang does for Advancements, or what Gridlock does for their goals?
beniibobsOP2 months ago
I think the Gridlock goal requires you to generate basalt and then mine it. I had thought this extra step would be weird to explain but if it would really make the difference to the ppl downvoting, would that be better?
beniibobsOP2 months ago
I think half the people here are thinking you need to obtain the blue ice to do the goal, that’s just not the case at all.
isawabelle2 months ago(edited)
i just don't really like goals that aren't like, directly from the player
like "trigger this to happen in the world" is a different goal type that draftout doesn't have right now (idt)
and goals like that just idk feel weird to me, and also have a lot more room for nuance and things triggering when they should/shouldn't

beniibobsOP2 months ago
I mean the gridlock goal requires you to also mine the basalt after you generate it, that’s kind of similar
pinkpuff2 months ago
I think this is a cool goal, very much a knowledge check and a variety of ways to obtain all the necessary ingredients, also showcases a niche feature which draftout loves to do!
blanket addict2 months ago
this wouldn't change anything for me because it feels like a mod taking more steps to detect what the player is doing
blanket addict2 months ago
I think the scope of draftout goals should be narrower than gridlock goals for sure and it has many goals that feel like this, and I think that's a fine decision for gridlock but it has a very different feeling from what draftout does
blanket addict2 months ago(edited)
but generating basalt specifically is pretty in line with what mojang does with advancements (which I think is the scope draftout should aim for) it's very borderline
blanket addict2 months ago(edited)
I think having the scope be similar to what can be minecraft advancements probably still leaves atleast 500 potential goals that could be added to draftout without making the goal pool worse
isawabelle2 months ago
i dont particuarly like most gridlock goals personally
spicedspaghettilast month
can rename the goal to break naturally generated basalt in the overworld but that wouldnt explain the generator part and would be kinda stupid
spicedspaghettilast month
I think generate basalt is direct enough though as its kinda specific
Pythorialast month
Btw basalt can't naturally generate from a basalt generator so it's not like its just a completely natural thing removed from the player
Pythorialast month
Blue ice not in nether and soul soil not in ow
beniibobsOPlast month(edited)
Exactly, and endermen can’t even pick soul soil up so the probability of it happening should be 0%
