If opponent disconnects and you're losing, it shouldn't forfeit them until you're winning

So like after 5 minutes or whatever the time is passes, it checks if you're ahead of the opponent in goals. If not, game doesn't end, but insta ends when you're winning again. Not sure if there's much of a purpose to this but like I feel like auto forfeit is kinda weird

Devs probably copied standards from other games but in draftout that makes sense ye

yea disconnectef player can still win on time limit

Yeah because there's a time limit this does make sense.

In other games if one player disconnects the other one will always win eventually, so might as well give it them for free.
Threadfinn
Threadfinn2 months ago
But in draftout the disconnected player could have won even if they were fully afk

I feel like in the case of a prolongued connection loss this might not always be good

but I guess the fact you only need to pull ahead means it's probably fine

I get that it could feel frustrating that you're basically playing not even against an opponent to have to win the match. But if you can't win the match without even having an opponent then you don't really deserve the win.

But also I can see the very frustrating situation where you're up 12-3 and disconnect, and then lose because you couldn't reconnect within 5 minutes.

I disagree with this suggestion but i dont fully have the words for why... I think just the thought of having to "prove" you can win by playing the game solo doesnt make much sense to me here. Obviously you can get ahead on goals when you dont have an opponent so I don't really see what the point is? Maybe itd just be better if disconnects ended in a draw (when servers more stable too) but that also seems bad, idk.

The main benefit would be losing because you disconnected on an otherwise unlosable game due to the time limit.
Threadfinn
Threadfinn2 months ago
It would prevent that.
Threadfinn

And also because the servers are unstable and disconnects are common it might be good to let people have more time to reconnect if they're ahead.

For good players that's obvious, for the lesser skilled not so much

Also opponent-less gameplay don't affect normal gameplay as much as in other games so cutting the game short is less necessary

It’d be so funny to watch someone go 12-0 up say “gl” then alt f4

At what level do you genuinely think they wouldnt be able to complete goals at all? That seems like a very rare case no?
Artnauta
Artnauta2 months ago
Depends on if the opponent reconnects too, idk what the timeout is currently at?

5 minutes, this suggestion seems to imply it would continue for as long as it takes (or probably until the match cut off of 1hr 15?)

match cut off is now 3 hours no?
Threadfinn

It's still 1hr 15min for comp, but lobbies can be longer

Lobbies go up to 3

I would feel like I'm wasting my time playing against no one for more than 10 minutes and just ff and go next

Pretty much my main issue too. Like im sorry if you have connectivity issues but i dont want to be forced to play solo over that like thats not my problem. I queue comp to have an opponent. Id genuinely rather it end in a draw or something than this

I agree with that it feels wrong based on playing other games, but when I think about it a bit it does make sense logically to me even though it still feels wrong. Draftout isn't exactly a direct 1v1 game. Yes you are competing against another player, but the objective isn't to beat them to every goal, the objective is to reach 13 before your opponent or to have more goals completed by 1hr15min. Even though they can't reach 13 if they disconnect, they still can win due to the time limit. If you can't beat them when they aren't there, then you clearly wouldn't win if they were there even if they were just in a death loop. Functionally there's no difference between an opponent that disconnected and an opponent that died in lava and doesn't know how to recover it. I've had some games where I wonder if my opponent is even still playing when they don't get any goals, advancements, or dimension changes for over 5 minutes. The only reason you know it's singleplayer when they're disconnected is because it tells you they're disconnected.

There's also the fact that how long you have to play against no opponent is based on how badly you were already losing.
If you're down 0-12 and your opponent disconnects and doesn't come back, you can see it as a chance to either get free elo by playing singleplayer, or forfeit because it was a loss anyways. Winning because your opponent disconnected with a massive lead and got auto forfeited never leaves anyone feeling like they deserved the win, you just got saved by luck.
If it's a close game say 10-12 at 1hour, then once again it's a chance to steal the win from an opponent that outplayed you but then had their power go out.
If it's a close game at say 5-6, then you only need a couple goals to win, so it's just a far quicker easier win than it would've been if they were still playing

Here's some examples of other game types I could think of where this doesn't work:
CS2/Valorant/any direct pvp game: If the opponent isn't there then the other player wins by default as long as they know where the W and left click keys are. No skill is required to win.
Chess/other turn based games: If the opponent doesn't take their turn, the game can't proceed

Anyways these are my thoughts on it but while I'm logically in support I still agree it feels kinda wrong.

This is really well said, I will say this is the only competitive game I've played so I'm not comparing it to anything in my eyes, but i can say the few draftout matches Ive had where opponent disconnects i definitely start to play differently when I know theyre not in the seed which is why I'm still not a fan of this suggestion, i just do think it changes the gameflow more than id like.
For example, knowing I dont need to plan to trade off early game goals or something, I can just instantly go for all of them. Or if right before dc they got an advancement that clues me into what theyre doing, im going to immediately try to snipe that if i know theyve dced, as opposed to usually trying to adjust my line to get what they arent actively doing. Thats how im looking at it personally

I honestly lose all motivation in draftout if there's no opponent. that's why blackout doesn't work for me

12-0 and you disconnect with kill warden, enter end on the board

it should just auto forfeit after 15 mins

if 12-0 you are left with 13 more :-)

But consider the opposite 0-12 and you disconnect with kill warden, enter end in the board.

Your opponent just got their only win condition of you becoming incapacitated IRL and getting autoforfeited
