Paired goal picking logic

Some goals are very similar, and as such they should never appear as the two options when drafting, since then you’ll be forced to pick one. The worst offenders are below.

1. Spy on enderman / golem / piglin brute
2. Use name tag on sheep / ghast
3. Find stronghold / enter end

And some goals that could be linked but I don’t think it’s necessary.

4. Breed 6 / breed 8
5. Brew any kind of potion
6. Compost 5 / compost 7
7. Eat 20 / 25 different foods
8. Kill 13/15 unique hostiles
9. Leash 6/8 unique mobs

If both people don’t want to find a geode, I don’t think they should be forced to by bad goal rng. I think this change would allow for rerolls to be used more strategically instead of getting rid of what is effectively a single disliked goal.

on the other hand, village seed could get u spy on iron golem + brute if u go bastion + maybe enderman if u find warped

I like this suggestion, i think the drafting is a really interesting aspect of the game. Drafting lets you avoid the types of goals you don't like, so it makes sense to never offer two goals of the same type

I agree that "breeding", "spyglass", "brewing" are all good types to separate

I might also suggest "goals that require lots of iron" as a type, or "goals that require redstone"

I disagree, you can't always play to your comfort, and usually these situations are a reroll if you really are that scared of spyglass for example

The decisions should not be easier, at least imo

15 and 25 foods for example are very different goals, despite the similarities, hostiles is another example

Your opponent could always choose something you don’t want, such as spy glass. I just think having two goals which are essentially the same removes some of the choice that drafting is supposed to bring. Even if you’re ok with both spy glass options, for example, having them both appear means that you don’t really get to choose anything

I agree that these are very different, which is why I only put the longest of these options (like 20/25 foods) and I don’t think these are as necessary as some goals which are both extremely long / luck based and essentially the same.

Similar goals are not the same goal. For example enter stronghold vs enter end, do you want the extra pearls / rods needed from control of the nether or the ability to potentially snipe enter stronghold with low resources

You have 12 goals + a reroll, getting similar goals together sometimes does not feel like an issue to me in terms of limiting choice
excelguruson

I might also add that enter end and die to void are essentially the same for the vast majority of people that don’t know how to break bedrock

I think this shouldn't be added just because of how rare these scenarios actually are
blanket addict
blanket addict2 months ago
for any individual draft pick the odds of having any of the scenarios you listed happen is below 1/1000, probably well below that
blanket addict
blanket addict2 months ago(edited)
so you'd expect to have a choice like this once every 40 games
excelguruson
excelgurusonOP2 months ago
I don't think something rarely happening is a good reason to allow it to happen

it's not like adding this would be a bad thing really but like it's such a tiny change I think it's better to just keep the current randomization
blanket addict
blanket addict2 months ago
I think it's kinda novel when it's so rare and you can just save your reroll if you want to
beniibobs
beniibobs2 months ago
Isn’t this what the reroll was for? if you have 2 options you don’t like you can reroll them. If i have breed 6 and breed 8 im gonna be thinking which of these i think would be better for my planned line/strengths/opp’s weakness. Which is exactly the same reasoning you use when picking two goals that aren’t similar.

you already don't control half the board every game so having goals you dislike on the board some games is just how the game works
beniibobs
beniibobs2 months ago
And if 2 goals are in fact too similar, that’s a problem for the goals, not the drafting. We shouldn’t have 2 different goals that are the same thing.
blanket addict
blanket addict2 months ago
well there's a solid amount of goals that share the same difficult time consuming or rng part but then the goal branches off from there
blanket addict
blanket addict2 months ago
so you have the same reasons to avoid picking them but both existing is good

I actually think it's ok to have two goals which are too similar since it adds a little diversity between games, I just don't want to have to pick between them.
beniibobs
beniibobs2 months ago
How does that add diversity sorry I’m not following
excelguruson
excelgurusonOP2 months ago
I'm saying the scenario where goal A appears on the board with a 1% chance has less diversity then having goal A or goal B appear on the board, each with a 0.5% chance, even if goal A and goal B are similar.
excelguruson
excelgurusonOP2 months ago
I like the second option, but in this case I'd prefer for it to be hardcoded that you never have to pick between goal A or goal B
beniibobs
beniibobs2 months ago
My point is that if they’re too similar such that there’s essentially no meaningful thinking you can do to pick between them, they shouldn’t be two different goals. So there wouldn’t be diversity because the goals are fundamentally the same thing.

Like some goals can be really similar, like instant nether goals or instant village goals for example, but you might need different preparation which you can think about when deciding between them. And if you don’t like either you can reroll.
excelguruson
excelgurusonOP2 months ago
I mean there's obviously a spectrum in how similar goals are. If goals are too similar then we should only have 1, and if they're sufficiently different then we should have both. My argument is that there should be a third option, where we keep both goals but don't force a player to choose between them. Essentially for the reason @blanket addict mentioned above: they have the same difficult time consuming or rng part but branch off from there, so you have the same reason to avoid them but both existing are good.

i think having similar goals is fine; it just encourages forcing that particular goal
sugaarush
sugaarush2 months ago(edited)
like if eat 20 and eat 25 are both on the board then you can decide to force more foods as it'll put u up on two goals

just like how you'd go for a bt if theres heart of the sea and tnt yk
