wolf taming visual bug

We were playing 4 player blackout, and the last goal was to tame a wolf. I found a wolf and gave the first bone, and it showed hearts but I did not get the goal, so I got confused. I can only assume this was a visual bug. I fed it more bones and I did not have enough to tame it. Not sure if this is a draftout or minecraft issue.

did you have any kind of meat in your offhand, per chance

I don't think so, but I cannot remember for sure. Why would that show the hearts tho?

because you would be feeding the wolf rather than taming
