Make matchmaking more accurate at mid elo

Allow for longer queue times to search for an opponent with a closer elo. This would allow for much more close and competitive games. I appreciate having fast queue times, but realistically anyone who is playing a game that can take over an hour has the patience to wait for 30 seconds in queue to improve the match quality.

Of my 20 games I've played, I only remember one of them reaching 10 seconds queue time. I'm used to ranked and Valorant where I usually have to wait about a minute and that doesn't feel like too long, you can just get water, change music, or watch videos while in queue. The issue is that right now the matchmaking is so imprecise. Most games I play have ~150 elo difference between me and my opponent, and it would be better if there were better matchmaking instead of instantly putting me against whoever was already in queue and within 200 elo.

Out of 20 games, I've beaten a higher ranked opponent only once, and never lost to a lower ranked opponent. Clearly the ranking system is working well and is pretty accurate to players' skill, but it feels like there's so much skill disparity in games that the outcome is decided before I even start playing. Winning or losing my next game is just based on the luck of who I queue against. I'd rather have closer games where my performance is more likely to matter, and where any small mistakes or timesaves I make are actually important rather than just losing or winning on almost everything I go for.

I understand that the game is being built around high-level players and that at a high level less precise matchmaking is needed to ensure they are able to get a game. But for iron-amethyst I think it would be better to have closer matchmaking when possible.

I think making the matchmaking less accurate the longer you’re in queue for would be good

that way if there are people available within your queue range you’ll be able to queue them but you also won’t be stuck in queue for 1 hour

Yeah, like if you've been in queue for a minute then you can get someone 200+ elo away. I assumed it already does this, otherwise Feinberg and Mongey would never be able to play anyone except each other.

afaik the queue range is just 500 rn

I’m not sure if any changes were made since closed beta

Surely there's something more than that, it would be weird if as a gold 3 I can queue against top 50 players, and it hasn't happened yet

Even with the current queue range at a high elo you can have crazy high queue times, i saw Snakezy at a 40 something queue time in his stream once

Maybe for the future there could be adjustments but at the top i'm not sure if there are enough players to modify the queue ranges to be smaller

They could do something like ranked does where the queue range is a certain elo or 150 players, whichever is bigger

I think it prioritizes closer elo first
Threadfinn

Because the current system makes every q in gold almost instant, but top level players can spend more time in q than in game

but like I instaqueued feinberg a couple days ago when I was 400 elo below him

i mean tbf in terms of like, placement numbers you are in a reasonable range to do so

it definitely sucks to be placed against someone who's really high up but its a good opportunity to see how their overall play differs to yours and improve upon it

True, if the current settings are kept as the fast setting and the others are more precise this would be great

I don't know how draftout is working, but in ranked, the system is I believe 250 +- elo, or 50 leaderboard places. this is logical because you get people generally close to you, but high elo players have at least 49 people (2-51, minus the person they just played since you can't rematch) they can queue and any time.

Please do this

Why am I playing against someone two-three ranks higher than me?
sleepylessons

they get 10 ELO for a 30 minute match

I'd rather wait 5-10 minutes to queue and get someone actually in my ELO range

I think draftout does need to give a bigger range than 50 leaderboard places, just because the games take 3 times as long on average. But for lower elo it seems like it could filter for within 50 elo for at least a minute before expanding the search.

The idea is about how ranked handles expanding the search range.

The game is open beta, I don't expect games to be even yet, so many people just haven't played to their rank yet

Idk, from my personal experience the ranks are pretty accurate. I've never lost to an opponent lower ranked than me, and only beaten a higher ranked oppoent once (25 games played). Which is why it's annoying for the elo gap to be so large, it's like every game is decided before it starts but isn't worth much elo, unless the higher player makes a huge blunder.

I know a new rating system is in progress, I assume it will change matchmaking right?

It feels a bit strange that a median 950 elo player can queue over 75% of the playerbase.

most likely

Chess.com lets you choose in what rating range you want to queue

You'd think there are some competative integrity issues with that but it's ideal really, you get to decide how long you want to wait for someone close to your ELO, and high ELO disparity games only happen when both sides are ok with it
